READING, PA – The John Jay College women's soccer team generated all four of its shots in the second half as the Bloodhounds fell to Alvernia University, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Alvernia Turf Field.
John Jay moved to 0-2 on the season, while Alvernia improved to 1-1-1. The Bloodhounds were kept without a shot during the opening 45 minutes as Alvernia applied consistent pressure. John Jay goalkeeper
Anina Gut helped keep the match scoreless early, making four saves over the opening 21 minutes.
Alvernia broke through in the 22nd minute when Mia Ralston scored off an assist from Kylie Hein to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Wolves doubled their lead less than six minutes later as Faith Greenday converted a Reese Hamilton feed at the 27:15 mark.
Gut continued to turn away opportunities following the two goals, recording two more saves before halftime as the Bloodhounds entered the break trailing 2-0.
John Jay came out of halftime with a more aggressive approach and quickly began creating opportunities in the attacking third.
Sofia Soler registered the Bloodhounds' first attempt in the 50th minute, putting a shot on target that was stopped by the Alvernia defense. Soler followed with another attempt just over three minutes later.
Yamile Bastidas then forced goalkeeper Hailey Koop into a save in the 57th minute as John Jay continued to push forward.
The Wolves extended their advantage to 3-0 at 62:02 when Emily Walter found the back of the net following assists from Ralston and Kyla Lytle.
John Jay continued searching for its first goal despite the deficit.
Ava Lopez produced another quality opportunity in the 77th minute, placing a shot on target that Koop turned aside.
The Bloodhounds finished with four shots, placing three on goal, while Alvernia totaled 14 attempts with 11 on target. Soler led John Jay with two shots, while Lopez and Bastidas each recorded one. John Jay also earned three corner kicks.
Gut made six saves over 66:54 in goal before
Gianna Duarte took over for the final 23:06. Duarte stopped both shots she faced, giving the Bloodhounds eight saves between the two goalkeepers. Her two stops came against Greenday in the 74th minute and Jenna Charney in the 84th.
John Jay will look to bounce back when the Bloodhounds travel to Cairn University on Saturday, September 12 at 4:00 p.m.
