Long Island City, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team delivered a dominant performance from the service line on Tuesday evening, recording 36 aces while hitting .516 as a team en route to a 3-0 sweep of Medgar Evers at LaGuardia Community College. The Bloodhounds took the match by scores of 25-6, 25-4 and 25-5, finishing with 22 kills against just six attack errors on 31 attempts. Medgar Evers was limited to two kills and nine attack errors on 28 attempts for a -.250 hitting percentage.
The 36 total aces by the matches are the second most since 2011, when John Jay produced 37 against the Cougars back on September 9.
Kynzie MacInnes spearheaded John Jay's performance from the service line with a match-high 10 aces, while
Audrey Atchley and
Heidi Geyer recorded five apiece.
Hailey Waugaman and
Caroline Guerney each contributed four as nine different Bloodhounds recorded at least one ace.
Offensively,
Madison Mullan put together a perfect performance with a match-high six kills on six attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage despite appearing in just one set. Waugaman added five kills on five swings, while
Anna Santos finished with four kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Shamyra Herrera added two kills on two attempts.
Guerney handed out a team-high eight assists,
Kaia Mittauer added six and
Ansley Hobson contributed five.
Lizbeth Martinez led the Bloodhounds with six digs, while Mittauer collected four.
For Medgar Evers, Moutiatou Djibring and Hannah Rizika accounted for the Cougars' two kills. Djibring also recorded Medgar Evers' lone block, while Raine Williams handed out the team's only assist. Danajah Lawrence, Djibring and Enphani Huskey each recorded a dig.
After the teams traded points early, John Jay quickly seized control behind its serving. Hobson helped the Bloodhounds turn a 4-2 advantage into a 9-2 lead, contributing three aces during the run along with a kill. Santos also put down two early kills as John Jay established separation. MacInnes then took over at the service line. With John Jay ahead 10-3, the Bloodhounds scored 11 consecutive points during MacInnes' turn at serve, extending the margin to 21-3. MacInnes recorded five aces during the surge, while Santos and Waugaman each supplied kills. Medgar Evers' Djibring recorded the Cougars' lone kill of the opening set before Herrera put away the final point for John Jay to secure the 25-6 victory. The Bloodhounds hit .545 in the opening frame with eight kills and two errors on 11 attempts. Medgar Evers finished with one kill and five errors on 11 swings for a -.364 hitting percentage.
The Bloodhounds were even quicker out of the gate in the second. Guerney assisted
Alexandra Mateo for the opening kill before firing four consecutive aces as John Jay raced out to a 6-0 advantage. MacInnes added another ace before Atchley stepped to the service line and helped break the set open. Atchley delivered five aces during an extended service run that pushed the advantage to 16-2. Mateo followed with consecutive aces before Waugaman closed the set in impressive fashion. With John Jay leading 20-4, Waugaman served four consecutive aces to bring up set point before Herrera finished the frame with a kill for the 25-4 victory. Rizika accounted for Medgar Evers' lone kill of the second set. The Cougars finished the frame with one kill and two errors on eight attempts, hitting -.125, while John Jay posted five kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Mullan powered the offense in the final set as John Jay completed the sweep. After
Heidi Geyer opened the Bloodhounds' attack with a kill, Mullan caught fire, putting down four kills during an early surge that helped John Jay build a 13-1 advantage. Martinez contributed three aces during the stretch. Geyer then took her turn at the service line, producing five aces during another extended run that pushed the advantage to 21-3. Mullan added two more kills down the stretch to finish a perfect six-for-six offensively. MacInnes put the finishing touches on the victory, serving three consecutive aces for the final three points and a 25-5 third-set win.
