Martina Hot recorded a double-double for the Bloodhounds to defeat NYU-Poly, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14) on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. With the win, John Jay improves to 3-14 overall (1-4 in CUNYAC) while the Fighting Blue Jays fall to 2-11 for the season.
NYU-Poly took the first three points of the first set but the Bloodhounds tied it up at 12. The next few points went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging points. Ultimately, the Blue Jays won the set as they finished on a 12-5 run.
John Jay started the second half sluggish allowing NYU-Poly to take the first five points. The Bloodhounds called a timeout to regroup and focus. John Jay responded firing off seven straight points to take a 13-11 lead. The Blue Jays tied it at 16 before the Bloodhound rallied to take a 25-22 win.
The third set consisted of both teams exchanging points until NYU-Poly went on a 4-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. However, the Bloodhounds responded with a 7-1 run of their own. They would go on to take the final five points of the set to take a 2-1 lead.
For the first time in the match, John Jay took an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set. NYU-Poly rallied and tied the set at 11. However, the Bloodhounds closed out the set on a 14-3 run to record their third win of the season.
Hot was the difference maker for the Bloodhounds as she finished with a career-high 24 kills and 21 digs to go along with three service aces. Junior
Katherine Bonilla dished out a career-best 46 assists and added 10 digs. Sophomore
Perla Pozo had a team-high five service aces and 16 digs. Junior
Ashley Diaz and sophomore
Latanya Buckham finished with seven and six kills, respectively. Junior
Sandy Requeno contributed with eight kills and two digs. Sophomore
Bridgette Sarco registered 13 digs.
Fighting Blue Jays' Stephanie Serrano finished with 10 digs and 17 digs. Alyssa Niquette recorded 11 kills and 15 digs.
"I am very happy with how the girls responded after the first set," first-year head coach
Eder Mathelier said. "We need to continue playing like this if we want to win more matches."
The Bloodhounds will head to Hunter College on Saturday, October 12 for a CUNYAC Tri-Match. They will face CCNY at 10:00am and Baruch at 12:00pm.
