Box Score The women's volleyball team defeated Pratt Institute, 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 19-25, 15-10), in a five-set thriller on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 4-17 overall (1-6 in CUNYAC) and the Cannoneers fall to 7-9.
In the first set, the Bloodhounds took the first three points of the match before Pratt tied it up at 4. John Jay went on a 7-3 run in the middle of the set to give them an 11-8 lead. The Bloodhounds would go on to take the first set after taking four of the last five points.
Once again, John Jay opened up the second set with an early 5-0 lead. Pratt rallied right back by taking the next four points. However, the Bloodhounds responded right away by taking seven straight points. Ultimately, John Jay won the set, 25-22, to give them a 2-0 set lead.
Early on the third set, the Cannoneers recorded seven straight points to give them an early 8-3 lead. The next few points went back-and-forth but Pratt eventually took the set, 25-17. In the fourth set, Pratt took an early 9-2 lead but the Bloodhounds fought back rallying off five straight points. The Cannoneers ended the set on a 3-1 run to tie up the match at two games apiece.
In the fifth and deciding set, both teams exchanged points before the Bloodhounds had a 10-8 lead. John Jay took five straight points to lead 14-8. Pratt fought back to cut the lead to four but the Bloodhounds closed out the match on a kill.
John Jay had three players record a double-double; senior
Martina Hot, junior
Katherine Bonilla and sophomore
Latanya Buckham. Hot finished with a game-high 21 kills, to go along with 17 digs and four service aces. Bonilla dished out 44 assists and recorded 21 digs and five service aces. Buckham registered 12 kills, 13 digs, and three service aces. Junior
Ashley Diaz added four kills, three assists and 10 digs.
"Our team played a great overall match," first-year head coach
Eder Mathelier said. "Hopefully we can keep this winning streak going for a while."
The Bloodhounds will hit the road for two matches next week. The first will be against Maritime College on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:30pm. The second will be on Thursday, October 24, at the College of Saint Elizabeth at 7:00pm.
