The men's basketball team lost to DeSales University, 74-72, on Saturday afternoon in Grantham, PA in the consolation game of the Homewood Suites Tip-Off tournament. The Bloodhounds fall to 1-3 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1.
Senior
Kris Owens led the Bloodhounds with 28 points, on 8-of-20 shooting, and six rebounds. The forward went 7-for-13 from behind the arc. Senior
Korede Griffith recorded 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and team-high three steals. Senior
Darell Robinson registered 12 points and a team-high four assists. Junior
Kendal Jordan picked up seven points and six rebounds and junior
Calvin Ingram added six rebounds.
The Bulldogs scored the first eight points of the game until Jordan converted on a three-point play. DeSales then went on a 7-0 run to give the home team a 15-3 lead. The Bloodhounds cut the lead back down to six on three-pointers by Griffith and Owens. With 8:06 remaining in the half and John Jay down by five, Owens hit a three. Heading into halftime, the Bloodhounds trailed 37-31.
In the second half, the Bulldogs increased the lead to 18 with 12:37 left to go. The Bloodhounds were able to trim the lead to 10 after Griffith converted on a three-point play. DeSales responded by scoring three straight points to lead 59-46. With 6:24 remaining, the Bloodhounds took the lead, 60-59. The Bulldogs regained the lead but once again, John Jay tied it at 65 apiece with three minutes left. In the next two and a half minutes, DeSales had the lead four times but each time the Bloodhounds responded to tie it. The Bulldogs took a one-point lead and tacked on another one after a successful free-throw. With John Jay down by two with four seconds remaining, the Bloodhounds could not find a way to tie it and DeSales would hold on for the victory.
The Bloodhounds head to Lehman College on Tuesday, November 25, for a game at 7pm to open up conference play.
