In a rematch of the 2013-14 CUNYAC Quarterfinals game, the men's basketball team defeated York College, 69-60, on Friday night in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds snap their seven game losing streak and improve to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cardinals drop to 9-7 on the season and 4-4 in CUNYAC.
The Cardinals recorded the first bucket of the game but jumpers by senior
Kris Owens and junior
Kendal Jordan gave the Bloodhounds their first lead of the night. With the score tied at 4-4 and 16:38 left in the first half, York went on a 5-0 run. John Jay responded right away with a three-pointer by senior
Darell Robinson.
Halfway through the first half, a free-throw by senior
Korede Griffith tied the game at 21 apiece. Owens then connected on his next two shots to give the Bloodhounds a four-point lead.
With 3:20 remaining in the half, the Cardinals went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 30. Fortunately for John Jay, the Bloodhounds finished the half on a 7-1 run, ending with a three by Owens, to lead 39-32. John Jay shot an impressive 16-for-29 (55.17%) and 3-for-9 (33.3%) from behind the arc.
The Bloodhounds opened up the second half with Robinson draining a three, hitting a jumper, and Owens making a lay-up. York responded with a bucket of their own but John Jay opened up the game when Owens scored the next seven points to lead 53-34.
Not going down without a fight, York trimmed the lead to nine after going on a 10-0 run. Head Coach
Ryan Hyland then called a pivotal timeout to stop the momentum. Out of the timeout, Jordan and Owens hit back-to-back lay-ups each to put John Jay back up by 17.
After not closing the door against Medgar Evers two nights ago, the Bloodhounds were not going to let that happen again. John Jay would go on to win 69-60.
Owens finished with a game-high 26 points, on 10-for-23 shooting, with six rebounds, and one steal. The Queens native is averaging 26 points in his last three games. In addition, he is now 22 points shy of 1,000 career points.
Robinson recorded 15 points, shooting 50% from the floor, with six assists and two steals. Jordan registered his seventh double-double of the season, and first since December 9, 2014 against CCNY, with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and one block. Griffith dished out a game-high seven assists and also had two steals. Sophomore
Geno Ware added seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.
The Bloodhounds will travel to William Paterson on Monday, January 19, for a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
