The women's basketball team was defeated by Lehman College, 68-57, on Wednesday evening at the College of Staten Island. The Bloodhounds fall to 3-12 on the year and 3-6 in the conference. The Lightning improve to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the CUNYAC.
Early on, both teams exchanged buckets as the score was tied 7-7 with 16:47 left in the half. The Lightning then went on a 14-4 run to lead, 21-11. With the Bloodhounds trailing 25-16, John Jay went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 25 apiece.
The Lightning finished the half recording the next nine of eleven points to lead, 34-27. Freshman
Victoria Royal led the Bloodhounds with 11 points and three rebounds. Sophomore
Brianna Cunningham grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots.
John Jay started the second half on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to one. Three minutes later, Lehman increased its lead to nine after registering the game's next eight points. Halfway through the half, the Bloodhounds cut the deficit to six. Unfortunately, that's the closest John Jay would get to Lehman's lead.
Royal picked up her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds, and one block. Sophomore
Josephine Diaz recorded 17 points, four rebounds, and hit three three-pointers. Juniors
Amber Villegas and
Terri Chu combined for 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Cunningham registered nine rebounds and three blocks. Senior
Aneska Tejada grabbed a team-high 11 boards.
John Jay finished 21-for-68 (30.9%) from the field and 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc. The Lightning shot 36.59% (22-for-68) from the floor.
The Bloodhounds hit the road on Friday, January 23, when they head to Brooklyn College for a 5 p.m. conference game.
