The men's basketball team fell to Brooklyn College, 84-76, on Friday night in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 3-16 on the season and 2-8 in the conference. The Bulldogs improve to 16-3 on the year and 8-2 in CUNYAC.
John Jay got off to an early 8-0 lead as senior
Kris Owens and junior
Kendal Jordan each recorded four points. With the Bloodhounds leading 12-11 with 13:12 left in the first half, Owens nailed down two jumpers to increase the lead to five.
Five minutes later with Brooklyn trailing 24-17, the Bulldogs recorded the next six points to trim the lead down to one. The Bloodhounds next three possessions consisted of two three-pointers by junior
Darell Robinson and a three by Owens to take a seven-point advantage. Robinson also hit a three at the buzzer to put John Jay on top, 41-29, heading into halftime.
Three minutes into the second half and John Jay leading by 10, Brooklyn went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 44-40. As John Jay led by 10 with 7:35 to go, Brooklyn was able to trim the lead to five with five minutes left. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the contest, 65-64, with 1:33 on the clock.
Owens responded right away with a jumper and a free-throw by senior
Korede Griffith increased the lead to two. But with 24 seconds left, Brooklyn tied the game at 67 apiece. The Bloodhounds had one last possession but were unable to capitalize to force an overtime period. Brooklyn outscored John Jay, 38-26, in the second half.
With the Bulldogs having the momentum in front of their home crowd, Brooklyn started overtime on a 10-0 run. John Jay was able to get it down to a seven-point lead but the Bulldogs would hold on to pick up their eight conference win.
Owens and Griffith recorded double-doubles for the Bloodhounds. Owens finished with a team-high 21 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, and four assists. Griffith registered 14 points, 10 rebounds, a game-high four steals, and three assists. Robinson picked up 18 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Kevin Crosby came off the bench and grabbed nine rebounds.
John Jay went 32-for-73 (43.8%) from the floor and 7-for-21 (33.3%) from behind the arc. Brooklyn shot 39.2 (29-for-74) from the field.
The Bloodhounds will look to regroup for their next game on Wednesday, January 28, at the College of Staten Island for a conference game at 7:30 p.m.
