The men's basketball team fell to Baruch College, 77-54, on Tuesday night at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-10 on the season and 1-5 in CUNYAC. The Bearcats improve to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
With Baruch scoring the first two points of the game, junior
Calvin Ingram made a lay-up to tie the game. The Bearcats then went on a 8-0 run to lead 10-2 with 17:30 left in the first half.
The Bloodhounds responded right away with a 11-2 run of their own, courtesy of three three-pointers and a jump shot by senior
Kris Owens. Two free-throws by sophomore
Geno Ware gave John Jay a 15-12 lead with 14:41 remaining in the half.
Baruch then regained the lead but a lay-up by Owens once again tied the game. With the Bloodhounds down by two, junior
Kendal Jordan and senior
Korede Griffith made back-to-back lay-ups to put John Jay back up on top.
With 2:35 left in the half and Baruch leading by one, the Bearcats ended the half on a 10-1 run to lead 36-26. For the half, the Bloodhounds went 9-for-28 (32.1%) from the field while Baruch was 12-for-22 (54.5%). Owens led all scorers with 13 points.
Just like the ending in the first half, the Bearcats began the second with a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 20. The rest of the second half went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging baskets. The Bloodhounds were unable to chip away at the lead and would fall, 77-54.
Owens finished with a game-high 18 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. The Queens native went 3-for-8 from behind the arc. Senior
Anthony Saldarriaga recorded five points, five rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore
Jesse Higgins came off the bench and scored eight points and swiped a team-high three steals. Ware had five points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
The Bloodhounds head to Manhattanville College for a non-conference game on Saturday, January 10, at 7pm.
