The men's basketball team fell to Lehman College, 94-85, on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the CUNYAC.
Freshman
Essien Epps led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, to go along with four assists, one block, and one steal.
Senior Calvin Ingram picked up his first double-double of the season with 10 points, a game-high 11 rebounds (six offensive), and one block. Junior
Jesse Higgins recorded 17 points, five rebounds, and a team-high five assists. Freshman
Jerome Petty registered 13 points and two steals. Junior
Geno Ware had eight points and junior
Kiernan Hayes added five rebounds.
With the score tied at two in the first quarter, John Jay went on a 12-0 run with Epps and Higgins scoring 11 of the points. The Bloodhounds' largest lead came with 14:49 on the clock when Higgins nailed a three-pointer to give John Jay a 19-4 advantage.
The guests then went on a 21-8 run to cut their deficit to 27-25. Freshman
David Morris hit a shot from behind the arc and two free-throws by Ingram increased the lead back up to seven. With 5:15 left in the first half, Lehman scored four straight points to tie the game at 35 apiece. With the score knotted at 39-39, the Lightning ended the half on a 9-3 run to lead 48-42 heading into halftime.
A layup by Higgins in the second half cut the deficit to 51-45. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Lehman increased its lead to 61-47. A three-pointer by freshman
Luciano Cruz-Fernandez cut the visitors lead to eight points with 13:53 on the clock.
With 5:00 minutes remaining, the Lightning led 80-64. They would go on to win their first conference game of the season by a score of 94-85.
John Jay went 29-for-72 (40.3%) from the field, 12-for-30 (20%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-20 (75%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds travel to Kings Point to face USMMA on Sunday, November 29, for a non-conference match at 1:00 pm.
