The women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's College Long Island, 61-58, in a dogfight on Wednesday evening in Patchogue, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 2-3 on the season. The Eagles drop to 2-4 overall.Â

Brianna Cunningham led John Jay with a team-high 17 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the field, nine rebounds, a team-high two blocks, and one steal. Junior
Cassandra Chery recorded her first double-double with the Bloodhounds with 11 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and three assists. Junior
Josephine Diaz registered 11 points, two assists, and two steals. Senior

Chu gave John Jay an early 3-0 lead after draining a shot from behind the arc. The Eagles responded on a 7-0 run to take its first lead. Trailing 12-8, Cunningham and Ruiz made back-to-back layups to tie it at 12 apiece. Cunningham ended the quarter making two baskets as John Jay led 16-14.Â
Two minutes into the second quarter, Cunningham made a jump shot to increase the lead to 20-17. St. Joe's went on a 4-0 lead to regain a one-point lead. Three minutes later with John Jay trailing by one, Chery made a layup and Diaz nailed a three-pointer to put John Jay up 28-24. The Eagles ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 31-31 heading into halftime.Â
The first four minutes of the third quarter went back-and-forth. With the Eagles leading 37-35, the hosts went on an 8-0 run to take its biggest lead of the contest. The Bloodhounds fought back to close the gap to 45-40 heading into the final quarter.Â
In the fourth, St. Joe's increased the lead to nine but a three-pointer by Diaz cut the lead back down to six. Down by nine with 7:58, John Jay went on a 14-2 run to take the lead, 57-54. With 1:34 on the clock, the Eagles converted on two free-throws to regain the lead, 58-57. A layup by Cunningham with twenty-two seconds left put John Jay back in front 59-58. The Eagles came up empty on their next possession and two successful free-throws by Chu with five seconds remaining sealed the non-conference victory.Â
John Jay finished 24-for-64 (37.5%) from the field, 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc, and 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the free-throw line.Â
The Bloodhounds travel to Brooklyn College looking to get back to even in the conference. John Jay faces the Bulldogs at 5:00 pm.Â
