The men's basketball team fell to Baruch College, 77-65, on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 4-18 on the season and 3-10 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Bearcats improve to 15-4 overall and 11-0 in the conference.
Senior
Kris Owens led all scorers with a game-high 26 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Senior
Korede Griffith recorded 16 points, five rebounds, a game-high four steals, two blocks, and two assists. Senior
Anthony Saldarriaga registered 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Sophomore
Ronald Merriwether came off the bench and had six points, five rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore
Geno Ware finished with three assists and junior
Kendal Jordan grabbed five rebounds.
John Jay got off to an early 5-0 lead after Saldarriaga hit a jumper and Owens connected on a three-pointer. The Bearcats then went on a 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 8-5. With 14:38 remaining in the half, Baruch increased its lead to six.
Saldarriaga then made a lay-up and Owens recorded the next four points of the game to tie the score at 13 apiece. After Owens hit another shot from behind the arc with 9:14 left in the half, the Bearcats went on 7-2 to run to increase their lead to 25-18.
The guest's largest lead of the half came with 1:36 on the clock and Baruch up by 12. The Bloodhounds trimmed the lead at half to 36-29, after Owens drained a three and Griffith made a lay-up.
In the second half, John Jay closed the gap to three points after Griffith and Owens hit back-to-back jumpers. With 15:50 remaining, Griffith nailed a three to cut the Bloodhounds deficit to 41-38. Three minutes later, Saldarriaga's three tied the game at 43-43.
Baruch quickly regained the lead, 46-43, but Saldarriaga made two free-throws to cut the lead back down to one. The next four minutes consisted of both teams exchanging baskets. With 5:33 left in the contest and Baruch leading 58-53, the visitor's went on a 7-2 run to lead by 10.
The Bloodhounds tried making a late run but would go on to fall, 77-65. Baruch outscored the Bloodhounds, 41-36 in the second half.
The Bloodhounds will look to pick up their fourth conference win of the season on Friday, February 6, when they host Medgar Evers at 7 p.m. In their previous meeting in Brooklyn, John Jay fell to the Cougars, 67-61.
