Women's Volleyball Completes Comeback in Five-Set Thriller on Home Opener

With the women's volleyball team trailing two sets to one, the Bloodhounds pulled off a thrilling comeback to take the match, 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 26-24, 15-10), over Farmingdale State College. John Jay gets back to .500 on the season at 2-2. The Rams fall to 1-2 on the year.

Senior Latanya Buckham, junior Katrina Zapanta, and sophomore Rachel Eng all recorded double-doubles. Buckham finished with a game-high 19 kills, 13 digs, and a team-high six service aces. Zapanta dished out a game-high and season-high 33 assists and had 12 digs, four kills, and five service aces. Eng registered 12 kills, 16 digs, four assists, and three aces.

Sophomore Savannah Davis picked up a career-high and team-high 20 digs to go along with three blocking attempts. Senior Perla Pozo added 18 digs and three service aces and freshman Nyla Lloyd-Clarke finished with a team-high five blocking attempts.

The first set went back-and-forth as the Bloodhounds tied the score at 12-12. With John Jay leading 20-19, Farmingdale ended the set by taking six consecutive points. Early on in the second set, the Bloodhounds went on a 5-0 run to lead 7-3. The Rams cut the deficit to 14-13 but John Jay closed the set on a 11-2 run to tie the match at one apiece. 

The guests took a 10-6 lead in the middle set but the Bloodhounds rallied for eight straight points to lead 14-10. Four points later, the score was tied 14-14. With the score tied at 20 apiece, Farmingdale went on a 5-2 run to take the third set and lead 2-1.

In the next set, the Rams had an early 3-1 lead but John Jay responded with five straight points to lead 6-3. With the set knotted at 11 all, the Rams went on a 7-0 run. Once again, John Jay responded by cutting the deficit to 18-16. Later in the set, the Bloodhounds trailed 23-21 but rallied to tie the score at 23-23. The Rams took the next point and needed one more point for the win but John Jay fought back to record three straight points to send it to a fifth set. 

In the deciding set, the Bloodhounds started on a 7-2 run but the Rams closed the gap to 7-5. John Jay then recorded five of the next six points to lead 12-6. The Bloodhounds eventually sealed the victory on a serving error by Farmingdale.

John Jay finished with 41 kills, 40 assists, 19 service aces, and 81 digs. 

The Bloodhounds enter conference play on Saturday, September 12, when they travel to City College (CCNY) for a CUNYAC Multi-Match. John Jay faces the College of Staten Island (CSI) at 9:00 am and Baruch College at 1:00 pm.
