Women's Volleyball Fights Hard to Force Fifth Set But Falls to Lehman College

With the women's volleyball team trailing 2-0 in sets, the Bloodhounds rallied to take the third and fourth sets to force a fifth. Unfortunately, the Bloodhounds fell to Lehman College, 3-2 (25-14, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 15-10), on Friday night on the campus of Lehman College. The Bloodhounds drop to 3-5 on the season and 1-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the CUNYAC. 

Sophomore Rachel Eng and senior Latanya Buckham recorded their third and second double-double of the season, respectively. Eng finished with 11 kills, 10 digs, and four service aces. Buckham had a team-high 12 kills, a team-high 11 digs, and two aces. 

Junior Katrina Zapanta dished out a game-high 25 assists and had a game-high eight aces, eight digs, and four kills. Senior Perla Pozo registered five kills and two digs. Sophomore Savannah Davis added four kills, five service aces, and two digs. 

In the opening set, Lehman went on a 6-3 run and then scored five straight points to lead 15-8. The Lightning ended the set on a 3-0 run. In the second set, John Jay had an early 3-1 lead but the Lightning responded on a three-point run to lead 4-3. With Lehman leading 15-13, the guests rallied off six straight points and ended the set on a 3-0 run to lead two sets to none. 

In the middle set, the Bloodhounds scored the first three points. With the score tied at eight apiece, John Jay responded with five straight points to lead 13-8. Lehman fought back but John Jay ended up taking the set. The fourth set began with both teams exchanging points. Lehman's largest lead came when they were up 11-6 but the Bloodhounds rallied off eight straight points to lead 14-11. The Lightning regained the lead on a 6-1 but once again, John Jay tied it at 17-17. John Jay ended the set on a 8-2 run to force a fifth and deciding set. 

In the final set, the Bloodhounds took an early 4-2 lead. Lehman scored six straight points but John Jay cut the deficit to 8-6. The visitors went on a 4-0 run and eventually took the set, 15-10. 

The Bloodhounds host Maritime College on Tuesday, September 22, at 7:00 pm at Maritime College.
