The men's basketball team fell to Medgar Evers College, 89-73, on Wednesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in CUNYAC. The Cougars improve to 7-8 on the season and 4-3 in the conference.
Freshman
Essien Epps led John Jay with a team-high 25 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and a team-high two steals. Junior
Jesse Higgins recorded 19 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor, and a game-high five assists. Junior
Kiernan Hayes grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior
Calvin Ingram added five points and five rebounds.
John Jay took an early 6-2 lead but the Cougars chipped at the lead to trail 8-7 with 13:12 left in the first half. Three minutes later and up by one, freshman
Jerome Petty nailed a three-pointer to increase the lead to 15-11.
With 9:01 on the clock, Medgar Evers tied the game at 18 apiece. The Bloodhounds responded on a 6-0 run but the Cougars tied it up on a 6-0 run of their own. The guests took their first lead of the contest, 25-24, with 6:44 left. Two minutes later, John Jay increased its lead to six. Medgar Evers ended the half on a 16-4 run to go into halftime leading, 43-37.
Four minutes into the second half, the Cougars had a 52-41 advantage. John Jay chipped at the lead and with 13:45 remaining, the Bloodhounds trailed 52-46. Medgar Evers quickly increased the lead back up to 16 and the Bloodhounds would go on to fall by a final score of 89-73.
John Jay finished 24-for-58 (41.4%) from the floor, 6-for-21 (28.6%) from behind the arc, and 19-for-25 (76%) from the charity stripe.
The Bloodhounds continue their homestand when they host the Cardinals of York College on Friday, January 15, at the Doghouse at 8:00 pm.
