The women's basketball team defeated Hunter College, 76-69, on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Hunter College. The Bloodhounds improve to 3-7 on the season and 1-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks drop to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Senior
Terri Chu led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, shooting 6-for-13 from behind the arc, and three rebounds. Junior
Shaliyah Ruiz recorded 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a game-high four steals. Freshman
Karen Rosario came off the bench and registered 16 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high four blocks. Senior
Amber Villegas picked up 11 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore
Victoria Royal grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and junior
Cassandra Taylor dished out a team-high five assists.
Hunter started the game on a 9-3 run. A jumper by Taylor cut the deficit to four with 6:44 left in the first quarter. With the Bloodhounds trailing 16-9, Chu hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Hawks' lead to one. With 1:46 on the clock, Rosario nailed a jumper to tie the game at 19 apiece. The Hawks ended the quarter on a 4-1 run to lead 23-20.
Ruiz opened the second quarter with a layup and a three-pointer by Chu gave the Bloodhounds their first lead of the contest. The remainder of the quarter went back-and-forth as there were three lead changes. John Jay went into halftime leading 36-34.
Two minutes into the third quarter, Hunter tied the game, 38-38. The Hawks then went on a 7-0 run but John Jay responded by scoring six straight points to cut the deficit to one. Heading into the final quarter, the hosts led 53-49.
A layup by Royal in the fourth cut the lead to two. With 5:57 remaining in the game, Hunter increased its lead to 58-81. Ruiz connected on a three-point play to cut the deficit back down to four. Leading by two with 4:39 on the clock, Hunter hit back-to-back jumpers to go up, 65-59. Three minutes later, Chu hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one point. With 0:31 left, Ruiz made two free-throws to give the Bloodhounds a one-point advantage. Villegas sealed the victory after hitting four successful free-throws to give the Bloodhounds their first conference win of the season.
John Jay finished 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field, 7-for-17 (41.2%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-21 (71.4%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds host Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday, January 3, for a non-conference game at 3:00 pm at the Doghouse.
