The men's basketball team lost to Otterbein University, 69-60, in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Beaver Falls, PA. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-3 on the season. The Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall.
Sophomore
Essien Epps led John Jay with a team-high 17 points, a team-high six rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins recorded 11 points, on 3-of-5 from behind the arc, five rebounds, and two assists. Junior MiKing Richardson dished out a game-high five assists and freshman
Tyrone Dennis had nine points. Junior
Sherwayne Morrison came off the bench to pick up six points.
The Bloodhounds were hot early on as they scored 12 points in the first 4:27 to lead 12-4. With 7:57 left in the first half, Otterbein tied up the score at 20 apiece. John Jay then scored five straight points to regain the lead. The Bloodhounds went into halftime with a 32-29 advantage.
The Cardinals opened the second half on a 9-0 run to lead by six. A layup by freshman
Doug Levy tied the score 41-41 with 12:45 on the clock. With the Bloodhounds trailing by four, John Jay scored eight straight points to go up 51-47 with 5:18 remaining. The Cardinals responded on a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead. Epps hit a jumper to go back up by one but Otterbein followed on a 7-0 run to lead 59-53 with 1:32 left. The Cardinals ended the game shooting 10-for-10 on free throw attempts to seal the victory, 69-60.
For his efforts, Epps was named to the All-Tournament team after registering 30 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
John Jay went 22-for-52 (42.3%) from the field, 5-for-22 (22.7%) from behind the arc, and 20-for-26 (76.9%) from the free throw line.
