The men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Homecoming, 70-66, in overtime on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The Hawks improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in CUNYAC.
Freshman
Doug Levy registered his second straight double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore
Essien Epps recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high three steals. Freshman
Tyrone Dennis came off the bench to record 13 points, on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins picked up 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Junior
MiKing Richardson dished out five assists.Â
Hunter opened the game with four straight points but John Jay tied the score. Leading 8-6, the visitors went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-6 advantage with 13:06 on the clock. Trailing by seven, Epps hit a jumper and Dennis scored five straight points to tie the game at 16 apiece. Both teams exchanged leads in the next five minutes as the score was 29-29 with 1:24 left in the half. Epps hit a free-throw to end the half as John Jay went into halftime with a 30-29 advantage.Â
Harkins opened the second with a layup. Up by one, Harkins, Epps, and Levy made layups to increase the lead to 38-31 with 16:32 on the clock. Trailing 46-39, the guests went on an 11-0 run to lead 50-46 with 8:21 remaining. Freshman
Oneil Smith followed with a jumper and Levy connected on a layup to tie the score, 50-50 with just under seven minutes remaining.Â
The Hawks responded to regain the lead, 58-52, but John Jay would even the score 59-59 with 1:58 left to go. Both teams had final chances to take the lead but were unsuccessful. In the overtime period, the Hawks scored the first five points. Trailing by five with 0:36 left, Dennis drained a three to cut the lead to two. The Hawks made late free throws to hold on for a 70-66 victory.Â
John Jay finished 26-for-73 from the field, 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc, and 8-for-13 (61.5%) from the charity stripe.Â
