Ruiz and Royal Record Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Wins Close One Against College of New Rochelle

The women's basketball team pulled off a back-and-forth game, 66-64, against the College of New Rochelle on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 5-17 on the year. The Blue Angels drop to 8-12 overall. 

Junior Shaliyah Ruiz recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Victoria Royal picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Junior Josephine Diaz and senior Terri Chu combined for 25 points, five assists, and three steals. Freshman Karen Rosario added seven points and senior Amber Villegas grabbed five rebounds. 

With the Blue Angels leading 6-2 early on, John Jay scored four straight points to tie the game with 5:37 left in the first quarter. At the end of the first, the Bloodhounds held a 19-17 advantage. One minute into the second, John Jay increased its lead to five. New Rochelle cut its deficit to 25-23, but the Bloodhounds responded on an 8-0 run to go up by 10. John Jay went into halftime leading 38-31. 

The visitors started the half on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 40 apiece. John Jay bounced back to score five straight points. With less than three minutes left in the third, the Bloodhounds had a 50-44 advantage but the guests ended the period on a 7-1 run to tie the game, 51-51. New Rochelle took a one-point lead in their first possession of the fourth, but John Jay scored 10 straight points to lead 62-53 with 3:36 remaining. The Blue Angels cut the lead to two with 0:19 on the clock and had an opportunity to win the game on a three-pointer with three seconds left but could not connect. 

John Jay went 23-for-64 (35.9%) from the floor, 7-for-13 (53.8%) from behind the arc, and 13-for-21 (61.9%) from the free-throw line. 

The Athletics Department celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day throughout the day with various events. During halftime, the department showed a video asking staff and student-athletes what athletics meant to them. 

The Bloodhounds travel to Medgar Evers on Friday, February 5, for a conference game at 6:00 pm.
