The men's basketball team fell to York College, 78-73, on Tuesday night in Jamaica. NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 3-21 overall and 2-13 in the conference. The Cardinals improve to 8-14 and 5-9 in CUNYAC.
Freshman
Essien Epps led all scorers with a game-high 28 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior
Kiernan Hayes notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and three steals. Junior
Jesse Higgins recorded 19 points, a team-high six assists, and five rebounds. Senior
Calvin Ingram grabbed five rebounds.
With the score tied 3-3, the Cardinals scored the next seven points to lead 10-3 with 15:16 on the clock. Three minutes later, the Bloodhounds fought back to tie the game at 12 apiece. York responded on a 10-3 run to go up by seven with 8:20 left in the half. The Bloodhounds followed scoring six straight points to cut the deficit to one. A three-pointer by Epps with 3:07 remaining gave John Jay a one-point lead. Sophomore
Gabriel Torikashvili hit a three pointer right before the half to give the Bloodhounds a 32-29 advantage heading into halftime.
Three minutes into the second period, York regained the lead, 35-31. With the score tied at 37 apiece, the Cardinals went on a 9-2 run to lead by seven with 14:11 left in the game. Once again, the Bloodhounds fought back on an 8-2 run to close the deficit to one. Leading by two, York broke open the game after going on a 10-1 run to lead 64-53. John Jay made a late comeback and with 0:51 on the clock, trailed by two. However, the Cardinals scored the final two points of the game to win by a final score of 78-73.
John Jay went 24-for-55 (43.6%) from the field, 10-for-23 (43.5%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds close out the season on Friday, February 12, when they host City College (CCNY) at 8:00 pm at the Doghouse. Before the game, the Athletics Department will honor its two seniors,
Calvin Ingram and
Ronald Merriwether, who are playing in their final regular season home game of their collegiate career.
