The men's volleyball team fell to Baruch College, 3-2 (16-25, 27-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-8), on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 12-10 on the year and 9-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Bearcats improve to 13-10 and 12-1 in conference play. Prior to the match, John Jay had never won a set against Baruch.
Sophomore
Juan DeJesus picked up a double-double with a team-high 15 kills, 10 digs, one ace, and one block. Senior
Jack Palleschi recorded 14 kills, nine digs, and a team-high three service aces. Senior
Nicholas Anderson dished out a game-high 37 assists to along with six digs and three kills. Junior
Francisco Miranda finished with six kills, 10 digs, and an ace.
In the first set, Baruch took the first two points before the Bloodhounds fired off eight straight to lead by six. The Bearcats cut the deficit to 12-9 but John Jay increased its lead to 19-14. John Jay took the first set, 25-16 after ending on a 6-2 run. The second set went back and forth as the score was tied 11-11. The Bloodhounds then took the lead after scoring back-to-back points. Baruch responded to tie the set at 13-13. With John Jay leading 24-23 and serving for set point, Baruch took the point. The Bearcats would eventually go on to take the set, 27-25.
In the third period and Baruch up 4-3, the Bloodhounds went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-5 advantage. Baruch fought back to tie the score, 16-16. With the Bearcats leading 21-19, John Jay recorded three straight points but Baruch once again tied it at 22 apiece. Trailing 24-23 on set point, the Bloodhounds took the final three points to win, 26-24. The fourth set started off with the visitors scoring three straight points. With John Jay leading 9-7, the Bearcats went on a 7-0 run to lead by five. The Bloodhounds closed the gap to 17-14 before Baruch increased the lead back up to five. The guests evened the set at two apiece after taking the fourth, 25-20.
In the fifth and deciding set, John Jay scored four of the first six points. The Bearcats responded on an 8-0 run to lead, 10-4. John Jay got within five but Baruch took the set and match, 15-8.
John Jay totaled 45 kills, 40 assists, six aces, and 45 digs.
The Bloodhounds host Brooklyn College on Thursday, March 24, at 6:00 pm at the Doghouse. Prior to the match, the Athletics Department will honor two seniors,
Jack Palleschi and
Nicholas Anderson, who are playing in their final regular season home match. In addition, the Department will honor two rifle seniors, Matthew Pascual and Connie Villon.
