The #3 men's volleyball team defeated #6 Lehman College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 26-24), on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 16-11 on the year. The Lightning concludes its season with an overall record of 8-18.
Senior
Nicholas Anderson recorded a double-double with a team-high 23 assists, 10 kills, five digs, and a game-high three service aces. Sophomore
Juan DeJesus picked up 10 kills and nine digs. Senior
Jack Palleschi finished with nine kills, a game-high three solo blocks, two aces, and five digs. Junior
Francisco Miranda registered a team-high 11 digs and three kills. Sophomore
Brandon Dolores had five digs.
In the opening set, the Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before Lehman closed the gap to 9-8. Leading by one, John Jay recorded three straight points but the Lightning responded on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 14 apiece. The points went back-and-forth as John Jay was up 20-18. The Bloodhounds took set number one after ending on a 4-2 run, 25-21.
The middle set consisted of both teams exchanging points early on. With the score 9-9, Lehman went on a 6-1 run to take a five point lead. The Bloodhounds bounced back to cut the deficit to 16-13. Lehman quickly increased its lead back up to 19-13. John Jay followed on an 8-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. The Bloodhounds closed out the set on a 4-2 run, 25-23.
In the third and final set, both teams went back-and-forth as John Jay had a 6-5 advantage. The visitors then scored four straight points to go up by three. With Lehman leading 14-10, the Bloodhounds fought back to score three straight points and trail by one. Down by two, John Jay went on a 3-0 run to take a 18-17 lead. With John Jay up 24-22 and match point, Lehman fought hard to tie the set at 24 apiece. The Bloodhounds then picked up two straight points to win, 26-24.
John Jay totaled 35 kills, 30 assists, five service aces, five blocks, and 37 digs.
The Bloodhounds now advance to the CUNYAC semifinals for the first time in program history. John Jay will face #2 Hunter College at 4:00 pm at Baruch College. The winner will face the winner of Baruch and York College at 8:00 pm.
