The women's basketball team lost to the University of Valley Forge, 66-59, on Monday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-15 on the season. The Patriots improve to 10-2.
Junior
Dana Nicholson led John Jay in scoring with a team-high 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Senior
Cassandra Taylor recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, a season-high and game-high eight assists, and two steals. Sophomore
Karen Rosario registered 12 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Freshman
Uju Nwaigwe came off the bench to add 11 points, seven boards, and a team-high two blocks.
Valley Forge began the game scoring the first 11 points but two free throws by senior
Claire Prince and a layup by Taylor put the Bloodhounds on the scoreboard. The Patriots followed on a 6-0 run to lead 17-4. John Jay cut the deficit to 21-10 after one quarter. Ninety seconds into the second, the visitors increased their advantage to 17. With Valley Forge up 36-15, Nicholson made a three and Nwaigwe made a layup to cut the lead to 16. Heading into the half, the Patriots held a 41-24 advantage.
Four minutes into the third, John Jay trailed by 21. The Bloodhounds responded with back-to-back layups by Nwaigwe and a jumper by Rosario. Nicholson ended the quarter draining two straight three pointers to cut the lead to 52-40. Taylor opened the fourth with a jumper and a three pointer by Nicholson trimmed the deficit to seven. Down by 10 with 3:39 left to go, Rosario made two free throws and Prince converted on a three-point play. With Valley Forge leading by six and 1:11 on the clock, Nwaigwe hit a free throw and Rosario made a layup to cut the deficit to three. The Patriots ended the game going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to hold on for the win.
John Jay went 24-for-64 (37.5%) from the floor, 5-for-14 (35.7%) from behind the arc, and 6-for-8 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
