The women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat St. Joseph's College Long Island, 54-46, on Monday evening at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 2-17. The Eagles drop to 5-12 overall.
Senior
Cassandra Taylor led John Jay with a team-high 18 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Junior
Dana Nicholson went 4-for-5 from behind the arc, totaling 14 points, three steals, and a game-high three blocks. Freshman
Kaitlin Koehler and
Uju Nwaigwe combined for 21 boards and nine points. Sophomore
Karen Rosario recorded nine points and nine rebounds. Senior
Claire Prince grabbed nine boards and senior
Shaliyah Ruiz dished out a team-high five assists.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but Nicholson made a three and Rosario scored three straight points to take their first lead of the game. John Jay held a 10-9 advantage after the first quarter. Rosario started the second with a layup and a three pointer by Taylor and a jumper by Ruiz increased the lead to 17-9. The visitors ended the half on a 6-0 run to trail 22-19.
St. Joseph's scored the first six points in the third but the Bloodhounds responded as Rosario made a layup to cut the deficit to one. With John Jay down by one with 4:46 left, the Bloodhounds ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to lead 41-33. A layup by Nwaigwe to open the fourth put the Bloodhounds ahead by 10. The Eagles cut the lead down to seven but John Jay continued to answer and would go on to win by a final score of 54-46.
John Jay went 21-for-70 (30.0%) from the floor, 7-for-14 (50.0%) from behind the arc, and 5-for-6 (83.3%) from the charity stripe.
