The women's volleyball team defeated Western Connecticut State University, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22), on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 15-10 overall. The Colonials drop to 7-20.
Junior
Brittany Steele recorded her 11th double-double of the year with a team-high 16 kills, a team-high 12 digs, and two aces. Sophomore
Kimberly Rodriguez registered a team-high 28 assists and seven digs. Freshman
Brianna Geraldo finished with nine kills, six digs, and three service aces. Freshman
Nicole Aguasvivas added 10 digs and sophomore
Mirialis Almanzar led all scorers with eight total blocks. Junior
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke added eight kills and junior
Mballou Berete had a game-high four service aces.
The first seven points of the opening set went back-and-forth as WCS led 4-3. John Jay followed on an 8-1 run to go up by six. Holding a 11-7 advantage, the Bloodhounds broke open the set recording six straight points. The Colonials made a late comeback but John Jay took the opening stanza, 25-19. In the second, the guests jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. A 3-0 run by the Bloodhounds cut the deficit to 9-7. John Jay was finally able to tie the score at 17 apiece and eventually go up 20-17. However, WCS ended the period on a 7-2 run to even the score at 1-1.
The visitors registered six of the first eight points in the third. The Bloodhounds responded on a 16-7 run to regain the lead 18-13. The Colonials cut the advantage down to three but John Jay closed out the set to hold a 2-1 advantage. The fourth went back-and-forth as the score was tied 5-5. Down 15-11, the Bloodhounds scored five straight but WCS followed on a 3-0 run to retake the lead. Once again, John Jay responded with five straight to go up by three. The Bloodhounds took the final three points to seal the victory.
John Jay totaled 37 kills, 31 assists, 18 total blocks, 13 service aces, and 46 digs.
The Bloodhounds close out the regular season on Saturday, October 28, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY for a non-conference tri-match. John Jay will play Plattsburgh State at 1:00 pm, followed by Vassar College at 3:00 pm.
