The women's volleyball team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17), on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 7-6 on the year. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 6-7 overall.
Junior
Brittany Steele picked up her fourth straight double-double with a game-high 21 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore
Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a match-high 44 assists and had eight digs and a game-high four service aces. Freshman
Brianna Geraldo fell three kills shy of a double-double with seven kills and a team-high 20 digs. Juniors
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and
Mballou Berete finished with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Senior
Anna Gevorgyan added 12 digs.
The first set went back-and-forth as John Jay led 12-9. Rutgers followed on a 5-0 run but the Bloodhounds tied it at 14-14. Up by one, John Jay ended on a 6-1 run to take the opening set. The Scarlet Raiders opened with four straight points in the second. John Jay fought back to tie the set at five apiece. With the Bloodhounds trailing 17-16, the guests ended the period recording eight of the final nine points to even the score.
Just like the first, both teams exchanged points in the third period. Rutgers then led much of the set but John Jay fought back to tie the score at 14-14. Trailing by one, the Bloodhounds went on a 6-2 run to go up 22-19. John Jay eventually took the nail-biter, 25-23. In the fourth, both teams swapped 3-0 runs. Down by two, John Jay regained the lead 10-9. The Bloodhounds increased its advantage to 16-13 and would not look back taking the final four points of the match.
John Jay totaled 51 kills, 49 assists, six service aces, and 63 digs.
The Bloodhounds travel to Montclair State University on Saturday, October 7, for a non-conference match at 11:00 am.
