The men's basketball team ran past Brooklyn College, 86-70, on Friday night at the West Quad Center in Brooklyn, NY. With the win, the Bloodhounds are now over .500 in conference play at 8-7 and 10-14 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 5-19 and 3-12 in CUNYAC.
Sophomore
Essien Epps recorded his seventh double-double, and fourth in last five games, with a game-high 22 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists, a team-high three steals, and two blocks. Freshman
Doug Levy finished with his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 boards, three assists, and a game-high three blocks. Junior
MiKing Richardson poured in 21 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins added 11 points and four rebounds.
With the score tied 2-2, Richardson drained a three and Hayes and Levy made layups to put the Bloodhounds ahead by seven. The Bulldogs responded on a 7-0 run to tie the game. John Jay then followed with nine straight points to lead 20-11 with 11:47 left in the first half. The Bloodhounds' largest advantage of the period came when senior
Geno Ware nailed a three-pointer to put them up 29-18. John Jay went into the half with a 43-34 lead.
Epps started the second with back-to-back three's. Four minutes in, the Bloodhounds were up 54-36. Brooklyn followed on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to 10 with 13:29 remaining. Two successful free throws by Harkins and another three by Epps increased the lead back up to 59-44. With 5:58 on the clock, the Bulldogs trailed by 12 but the Bloodhounds would hold for an 86-70 victory.
The visitors finished 28-for-61 (45.9%) from the field, 10-for-23 (43.5%) from behind the arc, and 20-for-27 (74.1%) from the charity stripe. John Jay currently stands in fifth place in CUNYAC.
The Bloodhounds close out the 2016-17 regular season when they travel to Baruch College on Monday, February 13, for a conference game at 7:30 pm.
