The men's basketball team cruised to an 85-73 win over York College on Tuesday night at the Doghouse on Senior Night. The Bloodhounds improve to 9-14 overall and get back to .500 in conference play at 7-7. The Cardinals fall to 2-21 and 2-13 in CUNYAC.
Freshman
Wyatt Harkins led John Jay in scoring with 20 points, shooting 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Essien Epps recorded 19 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor, with four rebounds, and a team-high two steals. Junior
MiKing Richardson and freshman
Doug Levy finished with 11 points and five boards each. Levy also picked up a career-high and game-high five blocks. Seniors
Geno Ware and
Kiernan Hayes combined for 12 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and two assists.
York started the game on a 4-1 run but John Jay scored five straight points to lead 6-4. The next two minutes featured four lead changes as the score was tied 9-9. A jumper by Levy put the Bloodhounds up by four but the visitors scored four points to tie the game. John Jay broke open the half on a 13-2 run to take a 28-17 advantage. Up by three with 4:49 remaining in the half, the Bloodhounds ended the period on a 14-7 run to lead 43-33 at half.
Thirty seconds into the second, the guests cut the lead to six. Seven straight points by Epps increased the lead back up to 55-39. York got as close as nine points but John Jay would hold on for the victory.
John Jay finished 25-for-49 (51.0%) from the field, 8-for-18 (44.4%) from behind the arc, and 27-for-39 (69.2%) from the free throw line.
Before the game, the Athletics Department honored seniors,
Kiernan Hayes and
Geno Ware, who were playing in their final regular season home game of their collegiate career.
The Bloodhounds head to Brooklyn College on Friday, February 10, for their second to last conference game at 7:30 pm.
