The men's volleyball team defeated Brooklyn College, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22), on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds end the regular season with an overall record of 12-15. The Bulldogs finish at 12-10.
Freshman
Edwin Hernandez collected his fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman
Steven Alvarado dished out a game-high 41 assists and freshman
Godwin Sequiera recorded a team-high 12 digs. Junior
Juan DeJesus registered a game-high 17 kills and nine assists. Junior
Alexander Santana added 10 kills and six total blocks. Freshman
Kellvin Ortiz finished with seven kills and freshman Aleksandr Cekalins had a game-high three service aces.
The opening set went back-and-forth as John Jay led 6-5. The Bloodhounds then scored five straight points to go up by six. Brooklyn fought back to cut the deficit to 12-9 but John Jay increased the lead back to 19-14. The Bloodhounds recorded the final three points of the set to win, 25-19. Just like the first, both teams exchanged points in the second set as the score was 6-5 in favor of the guests. John Jay regained the advantage, 9-8, after going on a 4-0 run. Brooklyn responded later on with four straight points. With the score tied 23-23, the Bulldogs scored the final two points.
In the third, John Jay jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to two but a 6-2 run by the Bloodhounds increased the advantage to 20-14. Brooklyn made a late comeback but John Jay was able to hold on, 25-23. In the final period, John Jay started by taking eight of the first ten points. Brooklyn responded to cut the deficit down to 12-9 but John Jay increased the lead back up to 20-16. The Bloodhounds won the set, 25-22.
John Jay totaled 49 kills, 44 assists, five aces, and 39 digs.
The Bloodhounds and Bulldogs will once again face each other in the CUNYAC quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 11, at 6:00 pm in Brooklyn, NY.
