The women's volleyball team powered by Maritime College, 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14), on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds stay perfect at 3-0. The Privateers drop to 4-2.
John Jay had three players finish with double-double kills. Junior
Brittany Steele led the team in kills with a game-high 15 to go along with eight digs, two aces, and two solo blocks. Freshman
Brianna Geraldo recorded 12 kills, a team-high nine digs, and five service aces. Junior
Mballou Berete finished with 10 kills and senior
Anna Gevorgyan added eight digs and a game-high seven aces. Sophomore
Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a game-high and career-high 42 assists. Junior Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and sophomore Mirilas Almanzar combined for 11 kills.
The first set went back-and-forth as the score was tied 10-10. The Privateers followed on a 4-1 run but John Jay fought back to trail 16-14. The Bloodhounds rallied off six straight points to lead by four. The hosts took three of the final four points to win the opening set.
With John Jay leading 3-2 in the second, Maritime recorded five straight points but the Bloodhounds responded with four straight of their own to tie the score, seven apiece. With John Jay up 11-9, the Privateers fired off five straight points. Trailing by one, the Bloodhounds went on a 5-0 run to lead 19-15. A late comeback by Maritime was not enough as John Jay took the second set.
Early on in the third, John Jay and Maritime exchanged leads. Down by three, the Bloodhounds evened the score at 12-12. The Privateers followed on a 7-2 run but once again John Jay preserved to tie the set 22-22. Maritime finished the set on a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to two games to one.
With the Bloodhounds down 3-2 in the fourth, John Jay broke open the set on a 14-1 run, including a 10-0 run. The Bloodhounds ended the match winning seven of the final nine points.
John Jay totaled 50 kills, 46 assists, 22 service aces, 34 digs, and six total blocks.
The Bloodhounds travel to Medgar Evers College on Thursday, September 14, for a CUNYAC contest at 7:00 pm.
