The women's volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating CCNY, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16), on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 5-4 overall and stay undefeated at 4-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Beavers drop to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Junior
Brittany Steele led the team in kills with a game-high eight kills, seven digs, and two aces. Freshman
Brianna Geraldo registered seven kills, five assists, and four digs. Sophomore
Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a game-high 14 assists to go along with a game-high four service aces. Junior
Mballou Berete contributed with five kills and three digs. Senior
Anna Gevorgyan added a game-high nine digs.
The first set went back-and-forth as the score was tied 8-8. With the score knotted at 10 apiece, John Jay rallied off 12 straight points and ended on a 15-5 run to take the first set. CCNY scored the first point of the second period but the Bloodhounds responded with six straight points. The Beavers cut the deficit to 9-8, but John Jay went on a 3-0 run to lead by four. The guests fought back to tie the set at 13-13. With the Bloodhounds leading by one, the hosts ended the set on a 9-4 run to win the second set.
CCNY picked up the first four points in the third but once again John Jay responded with seven straight points of their own. Leading 14-10, the Bloodhounds broke open the set by tallying five straight points to complete the shutout.
John Jay totaled 28 kills, 22 assists, 10 service aces, and 30 digs.
The Bloodhounds travel to Dallas, PA for a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, September 30. John Jay will take on Mount Saint Mary College at 2:00 pm, followed by Misericordia University at 4:00 pm.
