The women's volleyball team swept a CUNYAC tri-match on Monday afternoon on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds were down 2-0 against Baruch but came back to defeat the Bearcats, 3-2 (29-31, 22-25, 25-14, 25-15, 15-7). John Jay also came out on top against Lehman, 3-1 (25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-13). The Bloodhounds improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference.
In the big win against Baruch, sophomore
Brianna Geraldo led John Jay with her eighth double-double of the year with a season-high and game-high 21 kills and 10 digs. Junior
Mirialis Almanzar registered a season-high 16 kills and junior
Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a season-high and match-high 61 assists. Senior
Mballou Berete and
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Freshman
Stephanie Marcano tallied a game-high 16 digs and freshman
Niovis Monsanto added eight kills and 13 digs.
Trailing 2-0, John Jay won six of the first nine points in the third set. The Bearcats tied the score 7-7 but John Jay rallied off six straight. The Bloodhounds ended the period on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Just like much of the match, both teams exchanged points in the fourth as the score was knotted at six. John Jay broke open the set on an 8-1 run but Baruch trimmed the lead down to 16-14. Up 20-15, the Bloodhounds registered five straight to even the score at 2-2.
In the fifth and deciding set, John Jay recorded five of the first seven points. Holding a 6-4 advantage, the Bloodhounds put together four straight and would go on to complete the comeback.
In the four-set win versus Lehman, Geraldo recorded a match-high 13 kills and eight digs. Monsanto finished one dig shy of a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior
Hualeska Garcia and Marcano registered 12 digs each. Marcano also had a career-high and game-high five service aces. Almanzar added eight kills.
The Bloodhounds cruised in the first and second sets to hold a 2-0 advantage. John Jay took an early 10-6 lead in the third but the Lightning fought back on a 5-0 run to lead 11-10. The Bloodhounds regained an 18-13 advantage but Lehman ended the period on a 12-1 run to trim the deficit to 2-1.
With John Jay trailing 6-4 in the fourth, the Bloodhounds won 11 of the next 15 points to lead 15-10. John Jay ended the match on a 6-0 run to complete the CUNYAC sweep.
For the day, John Jay totaled 118 kills, 108 assists, 110 digs, 25 service aces, and nine total blocks.
