The #3 women's volleyball team lost to #1 Hunter College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20), in the CUNYAC Championship on Friday night at Baruch College. The Bloodhounds advanced to the finals after upsetting #2 Brooklyn College, 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 22-25, 29-27), in the semifinals for the second straight year.
Against the Hawks, sophomore
Brianna Geraldo led the team in kills with 10 to go along with five digs. Freshman
Niovis Monsanto finished with seven kills and three digs. Junior
Kimberly Rodriguez recorded 23 assists and six digs. Freshman
Stephanie Marcano led the way with a team-high nine digs and junior
Mirialis Almanzar had a team-high two total blocks.
John Jay won four of the first five points but Hunter followed on a 10-1 run to hold a 11-5 lead. The Hawks ended the set winning five of the final seven points.
The second set went back-and-forth as the Bloodhounds trailed 7-5. Hunter registered 10 of the next 12 points to increase their lead to 10. John Jay fought back on a 7-1 run but the Hawks won the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
Both teams exchanged leads in the third but five straight points by Hunter gave them an 11-7 advantage. The Bloodhounds fought all set long but eventually fell by a score of 25-20.
In the win vs. Brooklyn, Geraldo notched her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 16 kills and a season-high and match-high 26 digs. Almanzar totaled 14 kills and three aces. Senior
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and Monsanto tallied 13 kills each. Rodriguez picked up her second double-double of the season with a match-high 49 assists, 13 digs, and three service aces. Marcano added 19 digs and a game-high four aces. Senior
Hualeska Garcia and sophomore
Nicole Aguasvivas finished with nine and eight digs, respectively.
With the score knotted at four, John Jay tallied six straight points. Leading 17-11, the Bloodhounds took the opening set after finishing on an 8-3 run.
The Bulldogs trailed 6-3 in the second but used a 5-0 run to hold their first lead of the set. John Jay was able to tie the score at 10-10. With the Bloodhounds trailing by one, John Jay put together five straight to hold a 16-12 advantage. The Bloodhounds recorded five of the last five points to go up 2-0.
John Jay started the third on a 7-0 run. The Bloodhounds increased its lead to 12-3 but Brooklyn started chipping at the deficit. Trailing 21-14, the Bulldogs went on a 11-1 to win the set and trail 2-1.
In the fourth, John Jay opened winning six of the first eight points. Brooklyn cut the lead to two but a 4-0 run increased the Bloodhounds' advantage to 11-5. The Bulldogs responded on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 13 apiece. With Brooklyn holding set point, John Jay rallied off three straight to even the score 24-24. Kills by Geraldo and Almanzar sealed the victory.
For their efforts on the day, Geraldo and Almanzar were named to the Championship All-Tournament team.
The Bloodhounds will now await to see if the team qualifies for the ECAC Championship. Last season, John Jay upset top seeded Alvernia University, 3-0, for their first ECAC win in program history.
