Trailing by 15 in the third quarter, the Bloodhounds stormed back to upset the College of New Rochelle, 66-63, on Wednesday night in New Rochelle, NY. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 3-2 and extend their win streak to three. The Blue Angels fall to 1-3 on the season.
Junior
All'aha Albright came off the bench to record a game-high 21 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman
Katie Healy finished with her best game as a Bloodhound as the forward had a season-high 15 points, a season-high and game high 15 boards, and a season-high and game-high six steals.
Junior
Nyasha Howard registered nine points, eight rebounds, and a season-high and game-high five blocks. Sophomore
Samantha Martir and freshman
Lily Rakitzis combined for 10 points, seven boards, and six assists, and three steals.
The first quarter went back-and-forth as the score was tied at seven apiece. The Blue Angels held a 10-8 advantage after one.
The hosts opened the second period on a 9-2 run to increase their lead up to 19-10. Two free-throws and a jumper by Albright and a basket by Martir cut the deficit to 21-16 with 3:49 left in the half. New Rochelle went on a late run to head into halftime with a 32-21 advantage.
The Blue Angels scored the first two points of the third but back-to-back layups by Howard and Healy cut the lead down to 35-24. New Rochelle's largest lead came at the 6:15 mark when they led 40-25.
Senior
Aliya Lipton scored John Jay's next five points and a jumper by Albright trimmed the deficit to 42-32. Albright made a layup as time expired in the third as the Bloodhounds trailed 49-43 heading into the final period.
A three-pointer by Albright, a jumper by Healy, and a free-throw by Albright tied the ballgame 49-49. The Blue Angels regained the lead twice but John Jay fought back to tie the score both times.
Freshman
Madison LaLone made two free-throws to give John Jay a two-point lead for their first lead since the opening quarter. CNR regained the lead but the Bloodhounds fought back as Lipton, Healy, and Albright made baskets to put John Jay ahead 61-58 with 1:57 on the clock. Two free-throws by Rakitzis sealed the come-from-behind victory for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay went 24-for-63 (38.1%) from the field, 2-for-12 (16.7%) from behind the arc, and 16-for-25 (64.0%) from the free throw line.
This is the first time John Jay has been over .500 since the 2013 season.
