The men's basketball team cruised to an 83-65 win versus Lehman College on Saturday afternoon in the CUNYAC Game of the Week and Opener at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. The Lightning drop to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in CUNYAC.
Senior
Jerome Petty led all scorers with a career-high and game-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting including going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.
Essien Epps netted 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals. The senior is now second all-time in program history in scoring.
Junior
Doug Levy continued his big play with his third double-double of the year with 14 points, a game-high 13 boards, and a game-high two blocks. Freshman
Santiago Collado came off the bench to add 10 points and sophomore
Romello Ford dished out four assists. Sophomore
Eric Pujols contributed with a career-high eight points and sophomore
Kyle LaGuardia had eight points and a pair of steals.
Early on in the first half, the game went back-and-forth as Petty drained back-to-back three-pointers. With Lehman holding a 11-10 advantage, Levy made a layup to start a 6-0 run to give the Bloodhounds a five-point lead with 14:05 on the clock.
The Lightning cut the deficit to two but Epps followed with a three that moved him to second all-time in scoring history. Up by two, John Jay went on a 7-0 run as Levy netted five points. With 8:51 left in the opening half, Pujols sank two straight three-pointers to begin a 13-0 run to break open the game. The Bloodhounds held a 49-28 advantage at the half.
Levy opened the second with a tip-in. The Lightning closed the gap but back-to-back-to-back three's by Levy, Ford, and Epps put John Jay back ahead by 32. Lehman made a late run as the Bloodhounds emptied its bench.
John Jay went 30-for-58 (51.7%) from the floor, an impressive 13-for-27 (48.1%) from behind the arc, and 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds hit the road to the College of Staten Island on Tuesday, December 4, for a conference game at 7:30 pm.
