The men's basketball team pulled off the upset over the College of Staten Island, 83-76, on Tuesday night in Staten Island, NY. The Bloodhounds' last win against the Dolphins came in 2013 and their last win in Staten Island was in 2008. John Jay improves to 5-1 on the season and remains perfect in CUNYAC at 2-0. The Dolphins drop to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Junior
Doug Levy continued his dominating season with a career-high and team-high 31 points, on an impressive 13-for-16, to go along with a game-high 16 boards, and a game-high three blocks. Sophomore
Romello Ford finished with his best game as a Bloodhound with a season-high 19 points and three assists.
Senior
Essien Epps fell two rebounds shy of a double-double with 12 points, eight boards, and a team-high six assists. Senior
Jerome Petty knocked down three three-pointers to tally 12 points. Sophomore
Kyle LaGuardia grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.
The first five minutes went back-and-forth as there were five lead changes. With the score knotted at nine, Ford converted on a three-point play to give the Bloodhounds the lead. CSI responded with six straight points but a three-pointer by Petty tied the game at 15-15 with 10:42 left in the first half.
Trailing by three, Ford made a layup and Epps scored John Jay's next five points to put the Bloodhounds ahead 24-20. Staten Island cut the deficit to two but John Jay exploded on a 10-0 run with Levy recording a jumper and a dunk.
Down by nine with 3:39 remaining, CSI went on a 6-0 run and the Bloodhounds went into halftime holding a 40-37 advantage.
Ninety-five seconds into the second period, the hosts tied the score 43-43. Levy followed with a three and a layup by LaGuardia put John Jay back up by five. Levy's layup increased the lead to six but once again the Dolphins tied up the game with 12:01 left on the clock.
Down by five with 6:49 remaining, Levy made back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to 65-64. A free-throw by Petty with 4:23 left tied the score at 67-67.
Levy followed to convert on a three-point play and then nailed down a jumper to put the Bloodhounds ahead by five. Staten Island hit a three but Levy responded with a layup and Epps knocked down a jumper to increase the lead to 76-71 with 1:04 left to go.
A combined seven free-throws by Epps and Levy sealed the upset for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay finished 28-for-61 (45.9%) from the field, 7-for-18 (38.9%) from behind the arc, and 20-for-28 (71.4%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds visit City College of New York (CCNY) on Friday, December 7, for a conference game at 8:00 pm.
