The men's basketball team lost to the City College of New York (CCNY), 73-66, on Friday night at the Nat Holman Gynasium. The Bloodhounds fall to 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in CUNYAC. The Beavers improve to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Senior
Essien Epps led all scorers with a game-high 26 points, a season-high and game-high seven assists, five rebounds, and a game-high four steals.
Doug Levy tallied his fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season after recording 17 points, a game-high 14 boards, and John Jay's lone block. The junior also went 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Kyle LaGuardia finished with eight points, six rebounds, a season-high four assists, and a pair of steals. Sophomore
Romello Ford dished out four assists.
With the Bloodhounds down 3-2, John Jay scored 11 straight with 16:45 left in the first half. CCNY followed on a mini 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four. Down by two with 6:01 remaining, the Beavers ended the period on a 13-0 run to hold a 36-22 advantage.
The Bloodhounds scored the first eight points of the second half to cut the lead down to six. Trailing by nine with 14:49 left to go, John Jay registered 10 straight to go up by one.
With the score knotted at 50 apiece, CCNY hit back-to-back three pointers. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to three but the hosts increased the lead back up to seven with 5:35 on the clock. The Beavers secured the win after making 11 of their final 12 free-throws.
John Jay finished 24-for-59 (40.7%) from the floor, 7-for-18 (38.9%) from behind the arc, and 11-for-21 (52.4%) from the free-throw line.
