The women's volleyball team lost a tough one to the College of Staten Island, 3-2 (25-27, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 17-15), in the CUNY Game of the Week on Thursday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in CUNYAC. The Dolphins improve to 5-3 and a perfect 3-0 in the conference.
The first set went back-and-forth with the score tied at 14-14. With John Jay trailing by two, the Bloodhounds went on a 4-1 run to regain the lead. The hosts took three of the final four points to take the opening set. Just like the first, both teams exchanged points in the second period as the score was tied six apiece. John Jay responded on a 7-1 run to hold a 13-8 advantage. Leading 15-13, the Bloodhounds broke open the set on a 6-2 run and would go on to lead 2-0.
CSI jumped out to an early lead in the third and followed with five straight points to go up 10-4. John Jay closed the gap but the Dolphins recorded four straight to trim the deficit to 2-1. The fourth went back-and-forth as Staten Island led 8-6. The visitors responded on a 6-1 run and won the final four of five points to tie the score at 2-2.
In the fifth and deciding set, John Jay recorded the first three pointw but CSI followed by winning the next four. With the Bloodhounds holding a 7-6 advantage, the Dolphins notched four straight points to lead by three. John Jay fought back to tie the set at 14-14 but CSI registered three of the next four points to complete the comeback.
Sophomore
Brianna Geraldo recorded her first double-double of the season with a season-high and match-high 17 kills and 12 digs. Senior
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and junior
Mirialis Almanzar totaled 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Junior
Kimberly Rodriguez finished with a season-high and game-high 52 assists, seven digs, and a team-high three service aces. Freshman
Stephanie Marcano registered a season-high and team-high 18 digs and senior
Mballou Berete added nine kills.
John Jay totaled 61 kills, 57 assists, 63 digs, 10 service aces, and five total blocks.
The Bloodhounds travel to Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, September 15, for a non-conference match at 12:00 pm.
