The women's basketball team cruised to a 68-40 win against Lehman College on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds improve to 9-7 overall and are now over .500 in CUNYAC play at 5-4. The Lightning drop to 1-16 and 1-8 in the conference.
Freshman
Katie Healy continued her dominating rookie campaign with a season-high and game-high 28 points and season-high and game-high 24 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double of the season. The forward is averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Junior
Nyasha Howard finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high five steals. Junior
Karen Rosario finished with 10 points, five boards, and three steals. Sophomore
Jessica Gorman grabbed seven rebounds.
Healy and Gorman scored the Bloodhounds' first 14 points of the contest. Sophomore
Jeles Williams followed with a layup. Two free-throws by Rosario gave John Jay a 19-9 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Two minutes in, the Bloodhounds increased its lead to 19 on a bucket by Howard. With 2:42 left in the first half, Lehman cut the deficit to 33-21. However, Healy responded with three straight points. John Jay went into halftime with a 37-24 lead.
Healy opened the third period with back-to-back layups. Both teams exchanged baskets as the Bloodhounds went into the final quarter up 47-31.
Leading by 14, John Jay broke open the game on a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 23. Healy and Howard finished with 23 of the Bloodhounds' 31 second half points.
John Jay finished 25-for-73 (34.2%) from the floor, 3-for-13 (23.1%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-27 (55.6%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse to host the University of Saint Joseph on Monday, January 21, at 5:00 pm.
