The men's basketball team snapped the College of Staten Island's 10-game winning streak with an 86-55 victory on Wednesday night at the Doghouse. With the victory, the Bloodhounds extend its win streak to four and improve to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in CUNYAC. John Jay sweeps the season series for the first time in school history and hands the Dolphins their second conference loss of the season. CSI drops to 12-7 and 8-2 in the conference.
"Our guys did a great job of executing our game plan tonight," head coach
Ryan Hyland said. "We had a focus and attention to detail that was incredible, I am so proud of our guys."
Sophomore
Romello Ford finished with a season-high and game-high 24 points, on 8-of-13 shooting, and a game-high five assists. Sophomore
Kyle LaGuardia recorded a career-high 15 points on a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor.
Junior
Doug Levy tallied 15 points, shooting 3-for-4 from three, and six boards. Senior
Essien Epps added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore
Odis Gause III grabbed six boards off the bench.
The Bloodhounds opened the game on a 11-2 run as senior
Jerome Petty and Ford scored five and four points, respectively. Staten Island trimmed the deficit to six but Epps and Ford hit back-to-back jumpers to increase the lead to 22-12 with 8:16 left in the first half.
Ford would go on to score John Jay's next 12 points as the guard caught fire. Up by eight, the Bloodhounds ended the half on a 12-0 run to lead 39-19 at the half.
Ford notched 18 points in the period, shooting 66.7% from the floor. Epps had eight rebounds.
A three-pointer by sophomore
Eric Pujols put the Bloodhounds ahead by 24. Leading by 20, John Jay broke open the game on an 8-0 run as LaGuardia recorded five straight points.
Staten Island would trim the lead down to 24 but the Bloodhounds continued to respond with hot shooting. The win now puts the Bloodhounds five games above .500.
"We have a blue collar team who loves doing the little things that it takes to win in this tough league, they showed that tonight," added Hyland.
John Jay finished 30-for-55 (54.5%) from the field, 9-for-19 (47.4%) from behind the arc, and 17-for-23 (73.9%) from the charity stripe.
The Bloodhounds hit the road for a conference game at Baruch College on Friday, January 25, at 7:30 pm.
