In a wild final four minutes, the men's basketball team was victorious in the final seconds, 67-65, over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon in Scranton, PA. The Bloodhounds improve to 3-1 and captured the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Electric City Classic Championship. The Pacers drop to 2-5 on the season.
"I am so proud of our guys effort this weekend," head coach
Ryan Hyland said. "Every guy touched the floor and contributed in one way or another."
Doug Levy was named the Tournament MVP after hitting the game-winning three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left on the clock.
"That's one of the plays we practice almost every day," Hyland stated. "We try to prepare our guys for any situation that might arise in a game so they're ready for the pressure - it definitely paid off."
Levy picked up his second straight double-double with a season-high and game-high 23 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia was also named to the All-Tournament team after registering 10 points, a season-high and game-high five steals, and three assists.
Senior
Jayson Brower notched 16 points, six boards, and three assists. Junior
Romello Ford recorded seven points, nine rebounds, and a team-high four assists. Sophomore
Angel Rivera had seven points and four boards.
Levy and Brower scored the Bloodhounds' first eight points of the contest. Down by two with 14 minutes left in the first half, Ford sank a three and Levy made a jumper to give John Jay a 14-11 lead. Three minutes later, the game was tied at 18 apiece.
Marywood scored four straight but the Bloodhounds responded on a 7-0 run capped off by a jumper by freshman
Garrison Watkins. The hosts followed on a 7-0 run of their own to go up by two but a pair of free-throws by Brower evened the score. The Pacers went into the half holding a 31-29 advantage.
LaGuardia opend the second with a jumper to tie the game. Down by two, the Bloodhounds scored seven straight with Levy recording five of them to lead 40-35 with just under 15 minutes remaining.
With John Jay up 48-40, Marywood went on a 11-4 run to cut the deficit to one with 5:51 on the clock. However, Rivera hit a jumper and LaGuardia made two straight baskets to increase the lead back up to seven with three minutes left in regulation.
Down by five, the Pacers hit back-to-back three-pointers to give them a one-point advantage with 15 seconds remaining. Levy scored four straight to regain the lead but Marywood followed with a 4-0 run to go up by one with six seconds left.
Ford brought up the ball and found an open Levy who drained the eventual game-winning three-pointer with 1.5 seconds to put John Jay ahead by two. The Bloodhounds defense came up big in the final second to hold on for the victory.
John Jay finished 24-for-53 (45.3%) from the field, 5-for-16 (31.3%) from behind the arc, and 14-for-18 (77.8%) from the free-throw line.
"These early season overnight trips are great for our team," Hyland added. "We definitely grew closer together as a family both on and off the court."
The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse on Tuesday, November 26, for Homecoming. The squad will host St. Joseph's Long Island College at 8:00 pm. The game will be live streamed for FREE at
