Kyle LaGuardia Leads Men's Basketball to 62-58 Victory Over SUNY Canton

The men's basketball pulled out a 62-58 win against SUNY Canton on Sunday afternoon at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 7-2 overall on the season. The Roos drop to 5-7 on the year. 

Junior Kyle LaGuardia recorded his second double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Junior Romello Ford and sophomore Angel Rivera combined for 18 points and seven rebounds. Ford also picked up a team-high four assists and team-high four steals. 

Senior Doug Levy fell two points shy of a double-double with 10 boards and eight points. Freshman Garrison Watkins came off the bench to add seven points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and a pair of steals. 

The visitors started the game on a 15-2 run but the Bloodhounds rallied back on a 16-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 18-17. With the game tied 20-20, the Roos scored seven straight but Rivera sank a three to end the run with 4:04 left in the half. John Jay went into the half trailing 34-32. 

Down by four in the second period, Levy drained a three-pointer and Ford made a layup to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the half. SUNY Canton made the next basket but John Jay followed on a 10-0 run to hold a 47-38 advantage with 15:49 left to go. 

Approximately six minutes later, the Roos evened the score at 52 apiece. Senior Luciano Cruz-Fernandez scored the game's next four points to put John Jay back ahead. A layup by LaGuardia with 2:33 remaining gave the Bloodhounds a 61-57 lead. The defense came up with big defensive stops to hold on for the non-conference victory. 

John Jay went 20-for-69 (29.0%) from the field, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc, and 16-for-20 (80.0%) from the charity stripe. 

The Bloodhounds travel to Elizabethtown College on Monday, December 30, for a non-conference tilt at 3:00 pm.
