Men's Basketball Returns From Break With Non-Conference Loss to Elizabethtown

After a 15-day winter break, the men's basketball team returned to play and fell to Elizabethtown College, 82-76, on Monday afternoon in Elizabethtown, PA. The Bloodhounds drop to 7-3 on the season. The Blue Jays improve to 4-4 overall. 

Senior Jayson Brower led all scorers with a game-high 23 points and game-high three steals. The forward also finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Senior Doug Levy notched his sixth double-double of the year with 12 points, a team-high 13 rebounds, and John Jay's lone block. 

Junior Kyle LaGuardia registered 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Junior Romello Ford tallied seven points, six rebounds, and dished out a team-high seven assists. Senior Luciano Cruz-Fernandez added eight points off the bench. 

The first eight minutes went back-and-forth as there were six lead changes with the score knotted at 13 apiece. The Blue Jays followed on a 13-0 run with 7:25 left in the first half. LaGuardia nailed a three-pointer as time expired and the Bloodhounds went into halftime trailing 40-29. 

Brower opened the second period with a layup. However, the hosts scored eight straight to increase their advantage to 48-31. Levy made two free-throws and Ford sank a three to trim the deficit to 12 with 16:21 remaining. 

Brower hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to single digits, 54-45. Both teams exchanged baskets in the next nine minutes as John Jay trailed 73-64. 

With 31 seconds on the clock, Levy made a three-pointer to trim the deficit to three. Elizabethtown hit 5-of-6 free-throws to end the game and hold on for the non-conference win. 

John Jay finished 26-for-64 (40.6%) from the floor, 9-for-25 (36.0%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse to take on the College of Staten Island for their final meeting against the Dolphins on Saturday, January 4, at 3:00 pm. The game will be live streamed at www.johnjayathletics.com/watch
