The men's basketball team escaped Nat Holman Gymnasium with a 76-74 victory over CCNY on Friday night. The victory increases the win streak to six. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Beavers drop to 0-8 and 0-1 in conference play.
Senior
Jayson Brower led the offense with a season-high and team-high 24 points, eight rebounds, a season-high and game-high four steals, and a team-high three assists. Senior
Doug Levy recorded his 1,000th collegiate point to become the 13th Bloodhound to achieve this milestone. The forward picked up his fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Sophomore
Angel Rivera finished with 15 points and three steals. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia registered his fourth career double-double and first of the season finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Romello Ford added seven points and three boards.
The Bloodhounds opened the game scoring the first five points with Levy recording three of them. The Beavers cut the deficit to 7-5 but Brower and Rivera made two straight layups. Up by four, John Jay went on a 10-0 run to hold a 21-7 advantage with 10:43 left.
CCNY trimmed the lead down to eight but once again the Bloodhounds responded with nine straight points to go up 17. A tip-in by Brower as time expired gave John Jay a 47-34 advantage at the half. Brower led all scorers with 15 points.
Forty seconds into the second half, Levy went into the record books with his 1,000th point. Rivera followed with a layup to put the Bloodhound ahead by 17.
The Beavers fought back on a 13-0 run to cut the deficit to 51-47. Brower scored John Jay's next five points and a basket by Levy increased the lead to 58-49 with 11:11 left to go. Four minutes later, CCNY was able to even the score at 63-63. Levy, LaGuardia, and Rivera went to work in the paint to regain a four-point lead for the Bloodhounds. Both teams would exchange baskets in the next four minutes as John Jay led 73-69 with 1:59 on the clock.
Up by two, Brower made two free-throws with 15 seconds remaining. CCNY trimmed it back down to two and had possession with eight seconds left. The Bloodhounds came up with a huge defensive stand to hold on for a two-point victory.
John Jay went 28-for-68 (41.2%) from the field, 4-for-18 (22.2%) from behind the arc, and 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the free-throw line.
