The men's volleyball team opened up CUNY Athletic Conference play on Monday afternoon on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds fell to Baruch College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15), but then rebounded to defeat Lehman, 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 30-28). John Jay is now 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in CUNYAC play.
In the loss to the Bearcats of Baruch, freshman
Alejandro Gallardo led the way with a game-high 12 kills and four digs. Junior
Krystian Surdel and sophomore
Anthony Francois finished with six kills each.
Junior
Godwin Sequeira tallied a team-high 23 assists and a match-high two service aces. Sophomore
Rintaro Kato added a team-high seven digs.
In the victory against the Lightning of Lehman, the first and third sets went back-and-forth. The Bloodhounds won three of the final four points to take the opening set, 27-25. Up 2-0, John Jay led 23-17 in the third period. Lehman stormed back on a 7-0 run to hold a 24-23 advantage, however, Gallardo came up with a kill to tie the score. Trailing 28-27, the Bloodhounds scored three straight with Surdel recording a kill for the set and match.
Gallardo and Surdel registered a team-high nine kills each. Gallado also tallied four digs and two aces. Francois recorded seven kills and a team-high three total blocks.
Sophomores
Dylan Senkiw and
Jose Peralta combined for 13 kills and eight digs. Sequeira dished out a match-high 37 assists and Kato had a team-high eight digs.
John Jay finished with 75 kills, 67 assists, 58 digs, 11 service aces, and 11 total blocks.
The Bloodhounds hit the road for a non-conference match at Kean University on Wednesday, February 20, at 8:00 pm.
