Men's Volleyball Back in Win Column After Topping York 3-0; Krystian Surdel Records Match-High 10 Kills

After dropping their last five matches, the men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) win over York College on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 10-16 on the season and get back to .500 in conference play at 3-3. The Cardinals drop to 3-19 and 1-5 in CUNYAC.

Junior Krystian Surdel led the Bloodhounds offense with a game-high 10 kills. Sophomore Anthony Francois and freshman Alejandro Gallardo finished with six kills and a match-high four service aces each.

Freshman Carlos Llivicura dished out a career-high and game-high 27 assists to go along with two aces. Junior Godwin Sequeira recorded a season-high and match-high 15 digs and sophomore Jose Peralta added six kills.

The first set went back-and-forth as the score was knotted at seven apiece. John Jay followed on an 8-1 run but the Cardinals responded winning eight of the next 10 points to trail 17-16. Leading 18-17, the Bloodhounds ended the period on a 7-1 run.

Just like the first set, the score was tied 7-7 in the second. John Jay recorded six of the next nine points to hold a 13-11 advantage. York fought back to even the score at 15 apiece but the Bloodhounds fired right back registering six straight. Down 23-16, York put together six straight points but John Jay tallied the final two points to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set replicated the first two with the score even at seven. Both teams exchanged the next 14 points as the score was then tied 14-14. The Bloodhounds broke open the period on a 7-0 run to complete the sweep.

John Jay finished with 31 kills, 29 assists, 23 digs, 13 service aces, and nine total blocks.

The Bloodhounds close out their regular season home schedule on Thursday, March 28, for a match against New Jersey City University at 6:00 pm. Before the match, the Athletics Department will honor senior Michael Chabla part of senior day.
