The women's volleyball team outlasted Maritime College, 3-2 (25-18, 8-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-4), on Wednesday evening in the season opener at the Doghouse. The Privateers drop to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Sophia Wheelan led the Bloodhounds with a team-high 12 kills and two total blocks. Senior
Mirialis Almanzar finished with 11 kills and five total blocks (including a match-high two solo blocks). Senior
Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a team-high 26 assists to go along with five digs and a pair of service aces.
Sophomore
Niovis Monsanto fell two kills shy of a double-double with eight kills and a game-high 15 digs. In their collegiate debuts, freshman
Stephany Chhay registered 11 digs, freshman
Jamarie Silverio had a team-high five service aces and five digs, and
Haley Potvin-Sanjurjo added seven digs and four aces.
Maritime began the opening set on an 8-2 run but the Bloodhounds stormed back with 12 straight points. The guests made a late comeback but John Jay took four of the final five points to win the set. Maritime controlled much of the second set to even the score at one apiece.
The third set went back-and-forth until John Jay went on a 6-0 run to lead 12-9. The Privateers followed with their own 6-0 run but the Bloodhounds ended the period on a 5-1 run to hold a 2-1 advantage. Both teams exchanged points in the fourth as the score was knotted at 12. With John Jay up 20-19, Maritime went on a 6-2 run to force a fifth set.
With the score 1-1, the Bloodhounds fired off 10 straight points to cruise to a 15-4 victory in the final period.
John Jay finished with 36 kills, 31 assists, 14 service aces, nine total blocks, and 47 digs.
The Bloodhounds host a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, September 7, at the Doghouse. John Jay will face William Paterson at 11:00 am followed by Bard College at approximately 3:00 pm.
