The men's basketball team stormed out to an early lead and never looked back as they rolled by Hunter College, 76-64, on Friday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 11-4 on the season and 5-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. John Jay is now in sole possession of first place in the CUNYAC Standings. The Hawks fall to 3-13 and 3-4 in the conference.
Senior
Doug Levy carried the Bloodhounds with his team-leading ninth double-double with a season-high and game-high 29 points, shooting 12-for-16 (75%) from the floor, 13 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Senior
Jayson Brower also tallied a double-double, his fourth of the year, with 14 points and 10 boards. Sophomore
Angel Rivera contributed with 12 points, four assists, and two blocks.
Junior
Romello Ford dished out a career-high eight assists to go along with six points and a team-high two steals. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia added seven points, four boards, and a pair of blocks.
John Jay stormed out to a 10-0 run to open the game with Levy scoring five points. Six minutes into the game, the Bloodhounds led 16-7. Three minutes later, the Hawks cut the deficit to three but Ford ended the run with a three-pointer.
Holding a 26-19 advantage, Levy tallied six straight points to increase the lead to 13. Heading into halftime, John Jay was up 34-25.
The visitors trimmed the deficit to seven to start the second half but Brower and Levy made back-to-back layups. Seven minutes into the period, the Bloodhounds led 45-35. Holding a 54-42 advantage with 10:47 left to go, John Jay broke open the half on a 6-0 run as the Bloodhounds cruised for their third straight win of the season. In addition, they now sit atop the conference standings.
John Jay went 27-for-64 (42.2%) from the field, 7-for-20 (35.0%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-19 (78.9%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds travel to Keystone College on Sunday, January 19, for a non-conference game at 2:00 pm.
