The men's basketball team dominated Baruch College, 67-51, on Saturday afternoon at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds extend their win streak to four and have now won seven of its last eight games. John Jay improves to 15-5 and 8-1 in CUNYAC, which is their best conference start since the 1984-85 season. Baruch drops to 12-7 and 6-3 in the conference.
Four players finished in double figures for the Bloodhounds. Senior
Jayson Brower led the way with his seventh double-double, and third in last four games, with a game-high 16 points, a team-high 12 boards, and a pair of assists. Junior
Romello Ford tallied 15 points and three steals. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia registered 14 points, seven rebounds, a team-high four assists, and a pair of blocks.
Senior
Doug Levy added 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore
Angel Rivera had seven points, five boards, and a career-high and game-high five steals. Freshman
Garrison Watkins grabbed four rebounds.
The Bloodhounds opened the game recording eight of the first 10 points as Rivera and LaGuardia had four points apiece. Leading 8-4, John Jay broke open the period on a 10-0 run with 12:51 on the clock. The Bearcats trimmed the deficit to nine but the Bloodhounds responded as Levy and Brower nailed back-to-back three-pointers.
Baruch cut the lead down to 10 with just over eight minutes left in the first half but a layup by LaGuardia as time expired put the Bloodhounds ahead 34-20 after 20 minutes. Brower, LaGuardia, and Levy all recorded eight points in the half.
Brower drained a three to give the Bloodhounds a 45-29 advantage with 15:33 left to go. Eight minutes later, the Bearcats chipped at the deficit to trail 53-41. Ford followed to hit a big three-pointer and would ignite a 9-0 run as John Jay cruised for an 16-point victory. The Bloodhounds remain at the top of the CUNYAC standings.
John Jay went 25-for-60 (41.7%) from the field, 9-for-21 (42.9%) from behind the arc, and 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the free-throw line.
