The men's basketball team held on for a 58-51 low scoring affair on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 16-5 on the season and an impressive 9-1 in CUNYAC. The Beavers fall to 1-19 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
Senior
Jayson Brower led the way for John Jay with a team-high 19 points, game-high six assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Junior
Kyle LaGuardia finished with 11 points and six boards.
Freshman
Garrison Watkins came off the bench to add seven points and five rebounds. Senior
Doug Levy grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with a game-high four blocks. Junior
Romello Ford swiped a game-high four steals.
The first five-and-a-half minutes were quiet as the score was tied 5-5. With the score even at nine apiece, Watkins and Brower connected on back-to-back three-pointers. John Jay's largest lead of the half came at 4:24 when freshman
Corey Jones Jr. made a layup to put the Bloodhounds ahead by eight. John Jay led 26-20 at the end of 20 minutes.
LaGuardia opened the second half with a layup to increase the lead to eight. With 15:32 remaining, CCNY cut the deficit to 33-30. John Jay responded on a 9-3 run to increase the advantage to 43-34. With 5:53 remaining, the Beavers trimmed the lead down to four.
The Bloodhounds' sting defense in the final minutes propelled them to victory and extend the win streak to five games.
John Jay went 22-for-53 (41.5%) from the field, 5-for-19 (26.3%) from behind the arc, and 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds visit York College on Friday, February 7, for a conference game at 7:30 pm.
